Zinc Borate is an efficient flame retardant in many polymers: In halogen free systems, zinc borates can be used either alone or in combination with other flame retardants such as metal hydroxides , phosphorus, and silicone It is extensively used in plastics, rubbers and coatings.

With superior thermal stability, it releases hydration water beyond 290°C. It also acts as an ideal synergist to improve the efficiency of other flame retardants, and is commonly utilized for wood preservation and ceramic flux production.
